Anna Calvi: Desire- 1 minute explanation

Anna Calvi's Desire was directed by Aoife McArdle in 2011.

1.13- 1.41.

The video the mise en scene seems to be an almost run down stately home, with paintings, statues and darkness.
In this frame there is a statue with a cracked face. This could symbolise the breaking up of someone. It could also symbolise that someone has two sides of their personalities.
The red lighting could relate to the lyrics, because around here she sings, ''God knows its just the Devil in me'', the symbolic colour for the Devil is red. Also the whole video is based on desire for fire. This could also be represented this way.

In this shot it looks like a small statue of a religious symbol. This backs up the religious idea of God and the Devil.
This also has a red lighting and it is on red carpet. This could signify the walk to hell.

This frame shows the artist singing the song. But it looks like a mirror image or a dusty unclear look at her. This could represent someone looking through to a different person. This could be part of the 'looking glass' affect.

Throughout the music video the artist is being shown. This makes the video a performing one, so that the artist can be associated with the song. Also the artist is wearing red. This further supports the idea of hell and the devil because of the colour. It could suggest that she is the devil or is portraying danger and sacrifice to something.

In this frame there is an image of a snake moving. This could be because of the poison included with the snakes.
Also this could represent the fear of snakes.

  1. Good detail and inclusion of screen shots. You interpret the video well, but still need to include reference to Goodwin in order to apply theory to your analysis.
