Powder paint planning
I came up with the idea of using the powder of powder paint to use in our music video. Alice did not like the idea at first but when she practiced with it, she understood why i wanted to use it. I took the inspiration from one of my favourite song 'Up In The Air' by Thirty Seconds To Mars. This music video has a scene using powder paint that looks really effective.

These are images from the music video which I really liked.
During our last hour of college, me and Alice chose the colours of powder paint that we will use. The colours we chose were:

I like the idea of a powder paint colourful fight. This shot could be used because it feels as if you are apart of the fight. |
I like the camera shot in this image, i also like the way they have used a line to separate the people in the video. Also the way the powder is being thrown is interesting. |

- Brilliant red
- Lemon Yellow
- Purple
- Sky blue
- Cerise
- Turquoise
- Leaf green
Mods and Rockers
The mods and rockers were two conflicting British youth subcultures from the early to mid 1960s. Media coverage of the mods and rockers fighting in Brighton in 1964 began a moral panic about British youths and the two groups were labelled as 'folk devils'.
The Rockers
Their subculture centered around motor cycling and their appearance reflected that. Rockers wore protective clothing such as black leather jackets and motor cyle boots. The most common hair style was a pompadour, which was associated with 1950s rock and roll- the rockers music genre.
The Mods
Their subculture was centred around fashion and music, and many mods rode scooters like Lambrettas and Vespas. Mods wore suits and other clean cut out fits, and preferred 1960s music genre such as soul, rhythm and blues.

Enigma video update
Unfortunatley, I was unable to attend the meeting because I had to be at a camp at Decoy Broad while the meeting took place so this is me and Alice talking about the meeting she had with the band and questions I wanted answering by the band and the bands responses to aour ideas.

"Enigma" lyrics
Verse:
Do you believe life is full of surprises?
A present knocking at your door,
But if you keep your heart strong,
You can rise above it all...
Chorus:
Love is a crossword,
Like an Enigma made with words,
We're all searching for the answer
In this big wide universe,
Moments working out what went wrong,
When you couldn't find the time to realise.
Verse 2:
Have you find the harder you try,
The harder you seem to fall,
But if you lift yourself up,
You can fight the world..
Chorus:
Love is a crossword,
Like an Enigma made with words,
We're all searching for the answer
In this big wide universe,
Moments working out what went wrong,
When you couldn't find the time to realise.
Bridge/Solo
Chorus:
Chorus:
Love is a crossword,
Like an Enigma made with words,
We're all searching for the answer.
In this big wide universe,
Moments working out what went wrong,
When you couldn't find the time to realise.
End.
1950's Teddy Boys
The Teddy Boys were recognised for their Edwardian dress code. They experiemented with 'dandy' fashion statements, appearances and practices as an anitidote to Poverty (Frywell 1963). They listened to American Rock and Roll music, (some artists included Elvis Presley and James Dean) (Brak 1985). They used both narcisism and dandyism at the same time.
In articles they were described as 'teenage terrorists' to create a public scare. In another article they were described as 'very nauseating specimens of English youth... They are an awful disgrace to Brighton'. In other articles aggressive language was used to exaggerate the behaviour of the group. The other party involved were described as minor and small, suggesting that the Teddy boys were more dangerous, while they are at the bottom of the authority ladder. The teddy boys were an easy target for the media to blame because they had this reputation.
The Teddy Boys are associated with violence driven from a 'butch' dandyism, which sought to protest working class masculinity. They were apparently worse in winter because of the lack of jobs and access of places to go. In another article they were said to be that way becuase they lacked religious belief, which put them into darkness.

Picture of the ware house we will be filming the band at
Enigma music video break down
While listening to the song, me and Alice thought of possible shots for the music video and other notes that me and Alice noted independantly to be included with in the video. Alice constructed a timeline for the music video.

Confetti Cannon? Band static and motionless. Fade to black as lights turn off.
|
These are ideas about where to place certain things with in the music video.
First, the main singer (Ryan) would have a spot light on him while the back ground is in darkness. I was thinking of starting the music video in black and white and then gradually making it more colourful by the end. I was thinking that the shots would be quick, so that the audience's attension would remain on the band and the song throughout.
Me and Alice have not yet decided whether to actually host a 'concert' and have extras join in with the filming or whethe the scene should just be the band and the lights.
With in the music video, me and Alice agreed that the band should play through out most of the scenes. Also there should be many shots of each of the band members with head anf mid shots. Also there should be a wide range of angles included to make the video more interesting.
We have not decided whether we should film at another location or whether to stay and film at the warehouse. I believe filming elsewhere wold add variety to the video.
The band has access to a confetti cannon, I believe that this scene will be at the end of the song, (many music videos with confetti cannon use them at the end to create a dramatic ending) and this would be more affective. Through out the music video i was thinking of using powder paint an have the band throw it at each other, this would create a more colourful and exciting activity for the band to show, happiness or the competitive side of them.
Example- All the wrong places- warehouse analysis
Over the weekend I watched Examples new music video and noted some aspects of it that i would like to include in the music video for Enigma. I like the use of the lights. (James Vivian has access to
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_2kVtUCj-E
2x Equinox Micro Bars, 1x Lantra G50, Laser and 1x Equinox Firecracker.) Also the warehouse idea, it was the bands idea to film in a warehouse which they have access to. In this video I like the images of him walking through the semi lighted under ground corridors. The urban feel about this video I would like to pay attention to and include in our music video.
I like this shot because there is not a lot of light on his face, this could be a shot that we use in our music video to portray mystery. |
I like the use of light on this shot also because of the figuring of the artist. I would do this with all four band members playing their instruments. |

Change in plans
The band has asked us to make another music video for another song. Enigma by Enigma.

This is the email that James sent me about changing the song of the music video.
With my permission Alice continued the conversation over the weekend, and was able to set up a meeting with them.

Previous plan- Studying beach music videos
Me and Alice during our 2 hour media lesson watched and commented on some music videos that were set at the beach. And whether we wanted to include some of the elements we had seen into our music video.
I liked this remake music video because it had a comic element in it. Also the shots used were interesting. I also liked that there were not that many camera shots so it kept simple.
Me and Alice did not like this music video. We liked the idea of focusing on each member of the band in the music video and some of the slow motion. But I did not like the use of fading in to one shot and then into another.
Gorillaz, Plastic Beach.

This is map of the main locations the music video will be filmed at. The key shows what will happen where. |
