Tanya Byron's 'pestilent children' article

Tanya Byron wrote an article called 'Pestilent Children' which highlighted the way the older generations view young people. She expresses her belief that in today's society, because of damaging views from the older generation there has been an increase in ephebiphobia (the fear of youth).

In her first paragraphs she quotes from a 6000 year old tomb, which describes its youth as 'rude and impatient'. She also quotes Plato, he describes, "They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They ignore the law. They riot in the streets, inflamed with wild notions. Their morals are decaying." And finally she quotes she quotes Peter the Hermit from AD 1274, "They young people of today think of nothing but theselves. They have no reference for parents or old age. They are impatient of all restraint", he then goes on to comment specifically about girls, "they are forward, immodest and unladylike in speech, behaviour and dress". Byron explains, 'such quotes illustrate what i believe has become historically nurtured and culturally damaging phenomenon'. She goes on to say that 'today this problem is worse than ever'.

She explains that the distorted perception of young people has created a self fulfilling prophecy among our youth. She explains that the young people of today are feared because of the actions of a minority group who are 'violent, aggressive and anti social'.

She explains how we can turn this around. She believes that 'schools need to support and resources to individualise teaching'. She explains that at Edge Hill University, they help to broaden young peoples personal and academic horizons. She then goes on to say that 'many universities lack robust student diversity and so do not allow themselves to benefit from young people who bring varied life experiences to their student population'.

Problems then solutions

Our problem was that the warehouse that we are filming at declined our request to throw the powder paint around their car park. Alice then got in touch with county council and they delined our request as well.
Luckily, I have grandparents that own a huge space of land. I asked them on Friday and they had to have a discussion with each other before they gave ma an answer. They got back to me on October, 13th and they agreed to ou rrequest if we can make sure that the paint will not stain the grass.

Youth Cultures

Youth cultures are formed from a specific dress code/ fashion, music influences, rebellion again what society deems 'the norm', having a collective identity with in this group and being marginalised and misunderstood. The word teenager falls into and means a constructed social group. This word teenager could have been created by marketers to seel products to this specific group of young people.

Ketley theory 2007- "Among young people themselves, a wide range of colourful labels such as "Goths, Skaters, Greebos and Surfers" are often used to make distinctions between the behaviours of specific frienship groups"

Critera for their to be a youth culture include:
  • dress code
  • music influences
  • expression
  • being marginalised
  • having an opinionated leader
  • literature- fan magazine and fan websites
  • fitting into a group but then also being an outsider.
Collective identity is the self that finds its solidarity with others who are similar.
Mediated, this is how the media influences and portrays social groups and the influence this has on their identity.
"We" media means that the marginalised social groups
have often used media as a way of forgiving theirown collective identity.
Prosumers are producers and consumers, we consume and distribute- due to the proliferation of technology.

THIS IS NOT COMPLETED, THIS IS A FIRST LOOK AT OUR IDEAS FOR THE MUSIC VIDEO AND THE IDEAS OF SOME TRANSITIONS WE WILL OR COULD USE FOR THE VIDEO.

Powder paint planning

I came up with the idea of using the powder of powder paint to use in our music video. Alice did not like the idea at first but when she practiced with it, she understood why i wanted to use it.  I took the inspiration from one of my favourite song 'Up In The Air' by Thirty Seconds To Mars. This music  video has a scene using powder paint that looks really effective.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9uSyICrtow

I like this shot because of the slow motion and you
can see the facial expression of the person in the video.
Also the way the powder is thrown is an interesting way.
To add i also love the colours they have used to contrast.
I like the idea of a powder paint colourful fight. This shot
could be used because it feels as if you are apart of the
 fight.

I like the camera shot in this image, i also like the way
they have used a line to separate the people in the video.
Also the way the powder is being thrown is interesting.

I like the way her face is hidden behind the powder.
I like the way the facial expression can just be seen
through the paint. The way the powder disperses
through the air would also be a cool way to throw the
powder. I love the colour contrast here as well.

These are images from the music video which I really liked.

During our last hour of college, me and Alice chose the colours of powder paint that we will use. The colours we chose were:
  • Brilliant red
  • Lemon Yellow
  • Purple
  • Sky blue
  • Cerise
  • Turquoise
  • Leaf green
We have already been to see the art teacher who allowed us to take a sample of powder paint and try it out. We have also already ordered 2.5kg of powder paint per colour through the college from teh EPSO book.

Mods and Rockers

The mods and rockers were two conflicting British youth subcultures from the early to mid 1960s. Media coverage of the mods and rockers fighting in Brighton in 1964 began a moral panic about British youths and the two groups were labelled as 'folk devils'.

The Rockers
Their subculture centered around motor cycling and their appearance reflected that. Rockers wore protective clothing such as black leather jackets and motor cyle boots. The most common hair style was a pompadour, which was associated with 1950s rock and roll- the rockers music genre.

The Mods
Their subculture was centred around fashion and music, and many mods rode scooters like Lambrettas and Vespas. Mods wore suits and other clean cut out fits, and preferred 1960s music genre such as soul, rhythm and blues.

Enigma video update

Unfortunatley, I was unable to attend the meeting because I had to be at a camp at Decoy Broad while the meeting took place so this is me and Alice talking about the meeting she had with the band and questions I wanted answering by the band and the bands responses to aour ideas.

"Enigma" lyrics

Verse:
Do you believe life is full of surprises?
A present knocking at your door,
But if you keep your heart strong,
You can rise above it all...

Chorus:

Love is a crossword,
Like an Enigma made with words,
We're all searching for the answer

In this big wide universe,
Moments working out what went wrong,
When you couldn't find the time to realise.

Verse 2:

Have you find the harder you try,
The harder you seem to fall,
But if you lift yourself up,
You can fight the world..

Chorus:

Love is a crossword,
Like an Enigma made with words,
We're all searching for the answer

In this big wide universe,
Moments working out what went wrong,
When you couldn't find the time to realise.

Bridge/Solo

Chorus:

Chorus:

Love is a crossword,
Like an Enigma made with words,
We're all searching for the answer.

In this big wide universe,
Moments working out what went wrong,
When you couldn't find the time to realise.

End.

1950's Teddy Boys

The Teddy Boys were recognised for their Edwardian dress code. They experiemented with 'dandy' fashion statements, appearances and practices as an anitidote to Poverty (Frywell 1963). They listened to American Rock and Roll music, (some artists included Elvis Presley and James Dean) (Brak 1985). They used both narcisism and dandyism at the same time.

In articles they were described as 'teenage terrorists' to create a public scare. In another article they were described as 'very nauseating specimens of English youth... They are an awful disgrace to Brighton'. In other articles aggressive language was used to exaggerate the behaviour of the group. The other party involved were described as minor and small, suggesting that the Teddy boys were more dangerous, while they are at the bottom of the authority ladder. The teddy boys were an easy target for the media to blame because they had this reputation.

The Teddy Boys are associated with violence driven from a 'butch' dandyism, which sought to protest working class masculinity. They were apparently worse in winter because of the lack of jobs and access of places to go. In another article they were said to be that way becuase they lacked religious belief, which put them into darkness.

Picture of the ware house we will be filming the band at

This is the warehouse we will be filming at.
James has said we can move all of the boxes and objects
out of the way, I want to know whether we can use the fog
light in the top left corner of this image.

Enigma music video break down

While listening to the song, me and Alice thought of possible shots for the music video and other notes that me and Alice noted independantly to be included with in the video. Alice constructed a timeline for the music video.
Time
Focus Shots
Other Notes
0-20
Focus mainly on guitar. Solemn Expression of band
Start off with one main light. Dimly lit. Animation: Tapping of feet
21-30
Focus on lead singer, static shots
31-34
Full shot of band, environmental shot
As music builds up more light variation
34-36
Drummer, close up of playing. Back view circle formation
Different colours or flickering effect with a white light.
37-1:00
Change of angle on different of different band members
1:01 – 1:12
Guitar
1:13 – 1:23
Bassist and Singer
1:24 – 1:45
Singer Close-up
1:46 – 1:58
Guitarist, extreme close up, odd shots
Guitar riff @ 1:46 – 2:40, all lights should be on. Casting a big shadow.
1:59 – 2:03
Cut to singer with long note hold
2:04 – 2:32
Guitarist riff, brightly lit, full focus on finger work
Slow down the pace of the transitions between shots.
2:33 – 2:43
All shot
At riff end, go back to quick cuts.
2:44 – 2:51
Drummer, guitarist and bassist transitions
Animation: Head bang
2:51 – 3:05
All, Fast/quick shots. Cuts to each members then all
3:06 – 3:09
Confetti Cannon? Band static and motionless. Fade to black as lights turn off.

These are ideas about where to place certain things with in the music video.

First, the main singer (Ryan) would have a spot light on him while the back ground is in darkness. I was thinking of starting the music video in black and white and then gradually making it more colourful by the end. I was thinking that the shots would be quick, so that the audience's attension would remain on the band and the song throughout.
Me and Alice have not yet decided whether to actually host a 'concert' and have extras join in with the filming or whethe the scene should just be the band and the lights.
With in the music video, me and Alice agreed that the band should play through out most of the scenes. Also there should be many shots of each of the band members with head anf mid shots. Also there should be a wide range of angles included to make the video more interesting.
We have not decided whether we should film at another location or whether to stay and film at the warehouse. I believe filming elsewhere wold add variety to the video.
The band has access to a confetti cannon, I believe that this scene will be at the end of the song, (many music videos with confetti cannon use them at the end to create a dramatic ending) and this would be more affective. Through out the music video i was thinking of using powder paint an have the band throw it at each other, this would create a more colourful and exciting activity for the band to show, happiness or the competitive side of them.

Example- All the wrong places- warehouse analysis

Over the weekend I watched Examples new music video and noted some aspects of it that i would like to include in the music video for Enigma. I like the use of the lights. (James Vivian has access to
2x Equinox Micro Bars, 1x Lantra G50, Laser and 1x Equinox Firecracker.) Also the warehouse idea, it was the bands idea to film in a warehouse which they have access to. In this video I like the images of him walking through the semi lighted under ground corridors. The urban feel about this video I would like to pay attention to and include in our music video.

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_2kVtUCj-E

I like this shot because there is not a lot of light on his face,
this could be a shot that we use in our music video to portray mystery.

I like the use of light on this shot also because of the figuring of the artist.
I would do this with all four band members playing their instruments.
